Saxophonist Julien Wilson and the “Stevies” – guitarist Stephen Magnusson, and accordionist Steve Grant – have worked together as the Julien Wilson Trio for the past 17 years, releasing two albums, and touring nationally and internationally (including Europe, South Korea and Indonesia). Their first album, Trio-Live (2007) was recorded as part of The ABC Jazztrack 30th Anniversary Concert. Their second album, Swailing (available on www.lionsharecords.com) saw them expanding their sound with the addition of electric guitar, moog guitar, bass clarinet and soprano sax, and recording both some “non-originals” along with new material. Swailing While the instrumentation of the group often invites “French” connotations, the band are all heavily influenced by Brazilian & Argentinean music forms. The trio has also expanded their repertoire to include material by Ellington, Ornette, Fats Waller, Hermeto Pascoal, and even Jules Massenet.
“Ravishingly beautiful music. Enchanting lyricism. The epitome of understatement.” – Jessica Nicholas, The Age
“Cushioned by the rich tones of the accordion, complemented by Magnusson’s lyrical lines, Wilson produces a gorgeous tone, and some beautifully melodic playing” – Adrian Jackson, The Bulletin
“The unusual, yet attractive, combination of instruments is perhaps the first thing you’ll notice, before you appreciate the rare skills of all three players, and their ability to combine their voices so seamlessly.” Adrian Jackson – Rhythms
